climbing recs
I wanted to create this page as a way to remember what I learnt while I was there, but also as a resource for anyone interested climbing in Japan! I've included the bouldering gyms I went to, the gyms that I've heard good things about but didn't get to go, as well as climbing stores that I went to for shoes and apparel.
Let me know if you end up checking any of them out (DM @lightweightleek on insta), would love to know how you found them!!
#ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ GYMS I WENT TO

Underground Bouldering Gym Jujo, Tokyo

By far the best gym I went to. I definitely learnt the most at this gym, lots of new movements and very hard climbing. For reference, they have grades starting at 8級 (easiest) and as a pink-orange climber at 9 Degrees Paramatta, climbs started getting droppable at 6級 (v0), one day sendable climbs were at 5級 and project level was easily 4級 for me. This was by far the toughest gym in terms of grading but the usual tip of ignoring the grades ofc applies. I got to see a handful of athletes while climbing here and it was really inspiring to see how they move on the wall. The only downside is that this gym is kinda far out from the city, BUT!!! I still recommend it, it's so worth it.

Climbing Bum Morinomiya, Osaka

More comp, dynamic style with 4 points of contact to start. A very pretty gym with aircon :) My fav gym in Osaka. I'm super uncoordinated/non-committing but they still had a lot of entry level dynamic climbs that were approachable for me.

Galera Taisho, Osaka

A gym with a very tight knit, supportive community, I felt really at home here. The climbs here felt like an intersection of Aussie and Japanese setting so the climbs felt kind of familiar but with some new movements here and there.

High Mount Takayama, Gifu

Despite being a smaller gym, I really loved the climbs here. There was a huge spray wall with some pre-set climbs or ofc you can make your own. This gym will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first gym we went to in Japan. As Takayama is a small town, this was the only bouldering gym around but it did not disappoint. Would recommend if you happen to be around the area. A bonus is that there is no registration fee!

KCWall Kanazawa, Ishikawa

An ok bouldering gym with a supportive community. We went here as it was the one closest to us when we were staying in Kanazawa. They have both a bouldering and lead wall available, and no registration fee.

#ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ GYMS I DIDN'T GO TO BUT HAVE HEARD GOOD THINGS ABOUT
Below are a list of gyms I never ended up going to but I have heard good things about. All gyms in the major cities like Osaka and Tokyo have a registration fee that can range from $5-$20AUD in my experience. It was simply more economical to commit to a gym and purchase a monthly pass hence why we didn't end up checking these gyms out.
#ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ STORES
Most gyms in the main cities will also have a pretty extensive store at the entrance of the bouldering gyms where you can find most of what you would typically need for a bouldering session. Below are more stores that we checked out when we found ourself in the area.
  • Sakaiya Jimbocho, Tokyo

Lots of shoes and apparel, I think the best all rounder store in central Tokyo. If you could only go to one, I'd suggest this one.

  • Calafate Mejiro, Tokyo

You can find Japan climbing apparel brands here as well as your usual climbing shoes and bouldering gear.
